PAUL MCCARTNEY 80!
|
Artwork for Höfner Guitar As Beatles fans know, Paul McCartney has been using the Violin Bass guitar from the German company Höfner since the beginning and they have a good friendship between Paul McCartney and the company. Höfner Guitar wanted to make an electric guitar for Paul's 80th birthday. They would surprise him with this exclusive, hand painted guitar. Due to my strong rock'n'roll connections, I was asked as a storyteller illustration artist to paint his guitar. We have already worked with Höfner on an other picture I made for a violin maker employee in the past. :: |
Painted mini McCartney's music history
McCartney loves painting, especially surrealists, and in interviews he said that his favorite color is blue and his favorite painter is Magritte. The lesson was given to me, but I didn't worry about my abstract style. I didn't want draw the Beatles story, because it's about McCartney's life journey.
I took into account that he is left-handed and how he will hold the guitar. If he will play on it, then the story can be "read" lying down. We start from the bottom left corner upwards, and the upper left part of the guitar is the recent.

The story starts from the industrial Liverpool's Mersey River, through the Beatles - than McCartney is symbolically pulled off the zebra by his dog "Martha", and the story continues with his Wings band, then towards his knighthood. I also display the Apple Music label, with the green apple, and I placed symbolic elements from his solo album covers. I've hidden the Beatles members as tiny elements, like ever-present "ghosts," and then at the top of the image is his current farm the Hogg Hill Mill Studio, which he loves and resides there.

The technique
First, I always draw by my hand, but then I use the digital techniques for sketches and imagine the colouring - not artifical intelligence.
The entire guitar body with the wooden cover has been sent by the Höfner factory. Of course it was without strings. I painted the cover with acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is already a synthetic paint, but we made sure to use the most natural paint material possible. I made all by hand, and than we sent back to Germany. In the Höfner factory the cover received an extra shiny coat of varnish and and got all the guitar fittings.
